From the Kiln of John Leach
Wood-fired Domestic Ware and Studio ‘Black Mood Pots’

20 November 2008 – 14 January 2009

To international collectors of studio ceramics, probably no name is better known than that of Leach. John Leach, eldest grandson of the illustrious potter Bernard Leach, continues the family tradition hand-throwing and wood-firing a range of domestic stoneware pots at Muchelney Pottery, set up 43 years ago in the heart of the Somerset Levels.
He and his pottery team at Muchelney, near Langport, make everyday tableware from jugs and bowls to casseroles and plates. The pots are glazed on the inside and their natural unglazed exteriors glow warmly with the distinctive flame markings of the wood-fired kiln. Ideally suited for oven-to-table use, they are safe for use in microwave ovens and in dishwashers.
As well as his range of workshop-produced tableware, John produces individual pieces of generous and expressive proportions. These ‘black mood pots’ (fired in sawdust-filled saggars), with their mysterious, natural markings, are signed.

The Shop
We have a large variety of high quality handmade ceramics on display in our co-operative. We are a marketing co-operative (est. 1996), with over forty independant professional potters and ceramic artists. Because our members also serve as POTTERS' staff, we can offer our pottery and ceramic sculpture at very competitive prices, keeping operational costs down while providing staff who know and appreciate what they sell.

We frequently change displays and special exhibitions of a great variety of types and styles of pottery and ceramic art: garden pots and ornaments, water features, sculptures, clocks, mirrors, wall decorations, lamps, vases, personal ornaments and ranges of tableware.

We can arrange instalment purchases and wedding lists, provide gift vouchers and also arrange for work to be made on commission. We accept cheques and most debit and credit cards.

The Co-operative.
Our co-operative organisation is committed to informing the public about the art and craft of ceramics and welcomes inquiries. At special events throughout the year, members of the public are invited to try their hand at making pottery with our help.

This is just a small sample of what we have at our shop. .For further information about our co-operative, our shop or individual potters or their work, email Margaret Crump margcrump@aol.com or telephone the shop 0117 3308445.. The shop is open Mon-Sat,10-6, Mon-Sun in Nov.&Dec.
